With 20 years experience in mental health, John commenced his career in public mental health positions at the Royal Children's Hospital, Murdoch Children's Research Institute and ORYGEN Youth Health, including research, clinical and consultation roles in individual, group and outreach settings. John has presented at several conferences and has delivered seminars to professionals in mental health, education, child protection and medical settings. Over the last decade, John has been treating clients in private practice and is a registered clinical supervisor.
John takes a warm and client centred approach to therapy, helping clients understand the difficulties they are experiencing, and ways to heal and grow. With strong training in the scientist- practitioner approach, he has a strong assessment lens and uses evidence based treatments including cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), schema focused CBT, mindfulness and acceptance commitment therapy. John works individually with young people and adults, and with parents where a more systemic approach to treatment is needed.
John has experience supporting people with a range of psychological difficulties including:
* Adjusting to significant changes in life including school and work transitions, relationship changes and/or preparing for retirement
* Persistent difficulties with overwhelming emotions including anxiety, sadness and/or anger
* Healing from childhood, adolescent and/or adult of trauma and/or neglect
* Grieving the loss of a person or special relationship
* Thinking difficulties including trouble with concentration, obsessive thinking, intrusive memories, unusual ideas or challenges coping with the demands of day-to-day life
* Understanding and thriving with one's experience of neurodiversity or a recent diagnosis (e.g. Autism, ADHD)
* Challenging behaviours such as compulsions, aggression, impulsivity and addiction
* Growing as a parent to support the most important people in your lives
Through his research and clinical experience, John has particular clinical interests in working with people with a history developmental adversity (e.g. child trauma and neglect), emotional difficulties (e.g. anxiety, low mood and anger), seeking parenting support, and mens mental health.
